Communication and meetings

Communication at work is so important. There are occasions when you either have to speak up at meetings or deliver a presentation. Experience has taught me that it is really enjoyable and fun to speak up at meetings and put your point of view across. The most important person at a meeting is the chair or the manager running the meeting. All too often this person takes over and does not allow you the opportunity to speak or if you do then you are ignored and not listened to. This has the effect of discouraging you to speak up in future meetings and then it looks like you are not interested or bored. So it is important the manager/chair gives everyone an opportunity to speak but more importantly shows a genuine interest. It is then very important you speak up. Being ignored and put down at meetings can have a negative effect how you are in your work, so try to be strong and speak up.

Life After Redundancy

Redundancy is something that can change your whole life. It changed mine. It changed mine in a positive way. For the first time working for myself has given me freedom.

Advantages I have experienced working for myself

  • I am appreciated by many businesses for the work I do
  • I meet many new people
  • I give myself a task and see it through to the end without interference from people who think they know better.
  • I can choose to take a contract or not
  • I can have a cup of tea in my garden when working at home
  • I can have time off without asking permission
  • I can use technology to improve my efficiency without being questioned
  • I don't have to sit in an office all day
  • I see my wife more (very positive advantage)
  • I can have a power nap any time when working at home (can't do that in an office)
  • I can mow the lawn more.
  • I don't have to sit in meetings that are a waste of time (unless it is going to get me more work)
  • I smile more
  • I am happier
The list goes on and on

Of course there are some disadvantages but they can be managed
  • No sick pay - Just put some money aside
  • No holiday - just put some money aside
  • Never 100% sure where the next contract is coming from - Schedule marketing and network, oh and do a good job for repeat business.
  • Maybe a few extra hours work at weekends and evening. - this does get less
