Output not Input

Measure Output not Input
How many times have you been asked at work What are you doing? So many managers spend their time monitoring input and setting input targets. I have always found it better to focus on the outputs and set targets on outputs. For example I have seen too many times sales staff being targeted with the number of calls to make, or being monitored on a daily or hourly basis on activity. If you have recruited and made decisions on staff then let them get on with the job and just measure the outputs. Lets spend less time worrying about how long someone takes for lunch or if they are a few minutes late. Does any of the inputs matter if they are getting the outputs and output targets. Of course you need to ensure your staff are able to handle the inputs to get the outputs. This is where training comes in, you need to support staff in keeping up with the latest products, systems and technologies in order that they can handle and cope with all the inputs. The outputs will follow...... More profit.
