Communication and meetings
Communication at work is so important. There are occasions when you either have to speak up at meetings or deliver a presentation. Experience has taught me that it is really enjoyable and fun to speak up at meetings and put your point of view across. The most important person at a meeting is the chair or the manager running the meeting. All too often this person takes over and does not allow you the opportunity to speak or if you do then you are ignored and not listened to. This has the effect of discouraging you to speak up in future meetings and then it looks like you are not interested or bored. So it is important the manager/chair gives everyone an opportunity to speak but more importantly shows a genuine interest. It is then very important you speak up. Being ignored and put down at meetings can have a negative effect how you are in your work, so try to be strong and speak up.

Life After Redundancy
Redundancy is something that can change your whole life. It changed mine. It changed mine in a positive way. For the first time working for myself has given me freedom.
Advantages I have experienced working for myself
Advantages I have experienced working for myself
- I am appreciated by many businesses for the work I do
- I meet many new people
- I give myself a task and see it through to the end without interference from people who think they know better.
- I can choose to take a contract or not
- I can have a cup of tea in my garden when working at home
- I can have time off without asking permission
- I can use technology to improve my efficiency without being questioned
- I don't have to sit in an office all day
- I see my wife more (very positive advantage)
- I can have a power nap any time when working at home (can't do that in an office)
- I can mow the lawn more.
- I don't have to sit in meetings that are a waste of time (unless it is going to get me more work)
- I smile more
- I am happier
The list goes on and on
Of course there are some disadvantages but they can be managed
- No sick pay - Just put some money aside
- No holiday - just put some money aside
- Never 100% sure where the next contract is coming from - Schedule marketing and network, oh and do a good job for repeat business.
- Maybe a few extra hours work at weekends and evening. - this does get less

Get on Course for Success
Milton Keynes is a great place to live and work. The design of the the roads get you about the city with ease. If you prefer bicycle or bus then it's just as easy. Milton Keynes is still growing and have proved to be an ideal location for business. It is also centrally located which makes it easy to travel to other towns and cities for work. I have worked in Rugby, Northampton, Oxford, Swindon, Nottingham and Leicester. None of these places seem that far away when using the Motorway. I now deliver one-day courses to businesses in all these towns and find the travel easy. My company InIT Learning allow your staff to #getoncourse for #softwaretraining without the need to travel. Improving Productivity using IT
Improving productivity using IT is a mandatory unit from the ITQ qualification. It's about the process of doing a job from the planning stage through to reviewing and changing.
Plan - do - review - improve
This can be achieved in a couple of ways. It can be assessed, normally with a holistic approach while learners are carrying out their normal jobs. The other way is by a marked assignment. It is the marked assignment that some learners get the completely wrong idea. I have delivered courses using the BCS Awarding body and their marked assignment is excellent and learners got through it fine. On the other hand City and Guilds is slightly different and for some reason learners find it a bit confusing. I have seen some really excellent assignments from learners, however, I have seen a lot where learners simply answer the questions from the perspective of someone taking an exam rather than getting into the role of an employee as per the scenario.
I have delivered several sessions (I know other tutors who have done the same) and still learners get the complete wrong idea. I am puzzled how two award bodies can be so different. I would love to hear from other tutors that use City and Guilds and deliver this unit.

Self Employment v Job
Redundancy after 25 years with one employer was a tough situation to face. Having never been unemployed in my life I had to face many new challenges. Getting an interview was just one challenge along with the actual interview. Facing lots of Job Centre paper work was another challenge along with the challenge of very little in the way of support at the Job Centre. I realised very quickly that I needed to make some decisions if I was going to continue earning money and get away from paper work and waste of time Job Centre interviews just for £71.00 per week that just does not cover a family to live. I had skills that I used for many years in the training industry. Just because my skills and experience was not required by the employer that made me redundant did not mean they could not be used by either another company or even better by me. I decided to getoncourse with my life and get on course with my career. I decided that I would use my skills and be my own boss. Oh why did I not do this years ago. I can now make my own decisions and put into practice the many things that I felt would improve learning. Wow it's great no one to tell me it won't work. I now run a successful IT SoftwareTraining company delivering in-house courses in things like Microsoft Word and Excel. In addition I give support to training providers in the delivery of IT, Maths and English Functional Skills. I meet many new people and do not have to sit in an office.
